Oakland photographer/publisher Bill Caldwell of Momentum Publications and Hasain Rasheed have created a 100 page
full color book pairing approximately 300 photographs and illustrations depicting Oakland's past and present.
Photographs of Oakland as it is today at nearly identical locations are compared with views of Oakland from 1806 to
the 1990s. Each picture has each been selected for its ability to tell a story about a particular part of the city.
In some areas of Oakland, the changes have been dramatic; in others, the subtle changes challenge the imagination.
Caldwell's focus is on landmark buildings, old Oakland, Lake Merritt, the Port, Oakland's professional sports teams,
many neighborhoods as well as transportation advances and the ways leisure time has been spent for the past century
and a half. A time-line of Oakland's progress over 151 years, compiled by the Oakland Library staff and the Community
and Economic Development Agency, is featured.
Richard Spees, former Oakland City Councilman wrote the Introduction and said, "I think it's a terrific piece for the
promotion of Oakland. The virtue is that it's not only a book about Oakland's history, but also that - in juxtaposition
with the photos of the present - it creates an appealing visual memoir of the city's remarkable transformation. I think
it will be of great value."
"With the support of corporate and private donors, Momentum Publications is donating 700 books to the Oakland Unified
School District, Oakland Charter Schools, after school programs, the Oakland Library system, Children's Hospital and
other programs supporting Oakland youth", said Caldwell.
Oakland: A Photographic Journey gives one the unique opportunity to step into a time machine and see the past and present
together.
